Silver Beaver Award

The highest council-level recognition for volunteer service

About the Award

The Silver Beaver is an award given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service. It is given to those who do not seek it.

Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow upon a volunteer. It is presented for distinguished service to young people within a Scouting America local council. This prestigious award recognizes the impact an individual has made not just within their unit, but throughout the council and the communities it serves.

Award Criteria

Recipients of the Silver Beaver Award must demonstrate exceptional character and have provided distinguished service within the council. Selection criteria include:

  • Registered adult Scouter with significant tenure in the program
  • Council-level impact that goes beyond a single unit or district
  • Implementation of Scouting ideals in their personal and professional life
  • Notable service of exceptional character to youth both in and outside of Scouting
  • Community service beyond Scouting that demonstrates a commitment to helping others

The Silver Beaver Award

Silver Beaver Award

The Silver Beaver Award consists of a silver beaver pendant suspended from a blue and white ribbon. Recipients also receive a blue and white square knot that may be worn on the Scouting uniform, and a lapel pin for civilian wear.

The award is presented at an annual council recognition dinner or other significant event, highlighting the importance of the recipient's contributions to Scouting and youth development.

The beaver was selected as the emblem for the award because of its industrious nature and its historical significance in the early development of our country. Much like the dedicated volunteers who receive this honor, beavers work tirelessly to build something meaningful that benefits their entire community.

Nominations

Silver Beaver nominations are accepted annually by our local Hawk Mountain Council. The nomination process is rigorous, requiring detailed information about the nominee's service to both Scouting and the community at large.

If you know a dedicated Scouter who has made significant contributions at the council level and beyond, consider nominating them for this prestigious award. Nomination forms are typically available on the council website or at the council service center.
